Our Story
A story of love, loss, faith, and purpose.
Every foundation has a beginning. Ours was born from love, shaped by loss, strengthened by faith, and dedicated to bringing hope to others.
A New Beginning
In 2018, we relocated from Pennsylvania to Houston, Texas, in search of a fresh start and new opportunities for our family.
It was a major transition, but one filled with hope and optimism for the future. While my two sons remained in Pennsylvania, we began building a new life in Houston, believing brighter days lay ahead.
At the center of everything was Gio.
Much of our lives revolved around him. Whether it was work schedules, family activities, favorite movies, snacks, toys, or simply spending time together, Gio brought joy and purpose to our everyday lives.
As we settled into Houston, Ta’Von worked hard to build a stable, loving life for her son. She was a devoted mother who consistently put Gio’s needs before her own. She even worked a second job specifically to provide for him, ensuring he had what he wanted and needed.
Her dedication to Gio was evident in everything she did.
Ta’Von also had a heart for helping others. Within a few months of arriving in Houston, she encouraged several friends to relocate and pursue new opportunities. She helped connect them with employment opportunities and supported them as they adjusted to life in a new city.
Helping others was and is simply part of who she was.
As our family continued building a future in Houston, we were creating new memories, forming new relationships, and establishing new roots.
Like many families starting over in a new place, we were working hard, making plans, and looking forward to what the future would hold.
At the time, we were simply focused on family, building a life together, and creating a future filled with hope.
We had no way of knowing how quickly everything would change. We had been living in Houston for only about six months when our lives changed forever.
Those memories remain especially meaningful today because they remind us of the love, determination, and dreams that shaped our journey long before the Foundation existed.
Although our path took a direction we never could have imagined, the values that guided us during that season—love, family, perseverance, faith, and service—continue to guide us today.
They remain at the heart of our mission and the work we do in honor of Gio.
The Day Everything Changed
Only a short time after beginning our new life in Houston, our family experienced a tragedy that changed everything.
A fire took Gio away from us and left Ta’Von and I without a home.
In an instant, the future we had been building was forever changed.
No words can fully describe the heartbreak of losing a child so full of life, love, and promise. The grief that followed touched every part of our lives and left our family facing a reality we never imagined we would have to endure.
Along with the unimaginable loss of Gio, we were suddenly faced with the challenges that often follow tragedy. We were grieving while also trying to navigate the practical realities of rebuilding our lives after losing our home and many of our belongings.
The days, weeks, and months that followed were some of the most difficult we have ever experienced.
There were moments when the road ahead felt overwhelming.
There were moments when the pain felt impossible to carry.
There were moments when we simply did not know what came next.
Yet even in the midst of that heartbreak, something remarkable happened.
People showed up.
Family members, friends, neighbors, churches, organizations, coworkers, community members, and even complete strangers reached out to support us.
Some offered financial assistance.
Some donated household items.
Some helped provide school supplies, coats, gifts, meals, and essential resources.
Others offered prayers, encouragement, and simply stood beside us when we needed support the most.
Their kindness reminded us that even during life’s darkest moments, hope can still be found.
Although the loss of Gio will always remain a part of our story, so will the compassion that surrounded our family during that difficult season.
The support we received did not remove the pain, but it helped us take the next step forward.
It reminded us that healing often begins when people come together to help one another.
That lesson would ultimately become one of the cornerstones of Giovauni’s Hope & Recovery Foundation.
What began as an experience of receiving support would later become a commitment to providing support for others.
From Loss To Purpose
There is no roadmap for navigating the loss of a child.
There is no timetable for grief.
There is no moment when the pain simply disappears.
For our family, the loss of Gio changed our lives forever.
The grief remains, and it always will. We continue to miss his laughter, his voice, his imagination, and the countless little moments that made him who he was.
But over time, we began to realize something important.
While we could not change what happened, we could choose how we honored his life.
We could choose what his legacy would become.
As we continued healing, we found ourselves drawn toward helping others.
The support our family received showed us firsthand how powerful compassion can be during difficult times. Simple acts of kindness made an extraordinary difference in our lives.
Because others helped us, we wanted to help others.
Because others encouraged us, we wanted to encourage others.
Because others carried us through one of the darkest seasons of our lives, we wanted to help carry others through theirs.
What began as individual acts of service eventually became something much greater.
We organized coat drives.
We helped provide school clothes and supplies for children.
We assisted families during the holidays with Christmas gifts and support.
We looked for opportunities to serve people who were facing challenges, hardships, and unexpected setbacks.
Each act of service became a way to honor Gio.
Each family helped became a reminder that love continues long after loss.
Each opportunity to serve reinforced our belief that healing and helping can exist together.
Over time, those efforts grew into a vision.
That vision became Giovauni’s Hope & Recovery Foundation.
Today, the Foundation serves as a living tribute to Gio’s life and a reflection of the values he inspired in all of us.
Our mission is not simply about assistance programs or community outreach.
It is about people.
It is about helping families find hope when circumstances feel overwhelming.
It is about reminding others that they are not alone.
It is about transforming compassion into action and loss into purpose.
Although we will always carry grief, we also carry gratitude.
We are grateful for the people who supported us.
We are grateful for the communities that stood beside us.
And we are grateful for the opportunity to honor Gio’s life by helping others.
His story continues through every family we serve.
His memory continues through every act of kindness.
His legacy continues through every life touched by this Foundation.
That is our purpose.
That is our mission.
That is how we honor Gio.
A Word From Our Founder
I never imagined that one of the greatest losses of my life would also become the beginning of my greatest purpose.
Long before Giovauni’s Hope & Recovery Foundation was established, I learned the importance of serving others by watching my mother give selflessly to those in need. She taught me that kindness isn’t measured by what you have—it’s measured by what you’re willing to give. Those lessons stayed with me throughout my life.
After losing Gio, I experienced firsthand what it means to be carried by the compassion of others. Family, friends, neighbors, churches, organizations, and complete strangers reminded us that even in our darkest moments, hope can still be found.
As our family began to heal, I knew I wanted to honor Gio’s life in a way that would continue to make a difference. What started with community outreach and coat drives eventually grew into Giovauni’s Hope & Recovery Foundation—a mission dedicated to helping families recover, rebuild, and find hope after crisis.
Today, every program we create and every family we serve is rooted in the belief that no one should have to face life’s hardest moments alone. It is both my privilege and my promise to continue serving our community with compassion, integrity, and love while keeping Gio’s legacy alive through every life we touch.
